In
November of 1997,
the Bray Y2K
Survey
1 was developed
by
Darlyne G. Nemeth,
Ph.D.,
George E. Hearn,
Ph.D., and
C. Christiane Creveling,
M.A.,
in conjunction with
Bray Communications,
Inc., and Peter
deJager, the world’s
foremost authority
on the Year 2000
Computer Crisis.
Since that time,
Ralph M. Dreger,
Ph.D., and John
Lambros have joined
the team to assist
with data analysis.
After local distribution
in Louisiana to
numerous business
and professional
associations, the
Bray Y2K Survey
was posted on deJager’s
Year 2000 website
for mass distribution.
The Survey originally
measured four factors:
Content/Knowledge,
Denial/Resistance,
Anxiety/Apprehension,
and Depression/Discouragement.
Factor analysis
conducted on samples
from over 5300 respondents,
however, suggested
the clear presence
of only three factors.
Thus, the affective
scales of Anxiety/Apprehension
and Depression/Discouragement
were meshed into
one factor, Personal,
Even Physiological,
Concern About Y2K.
The other two factors
were labeled Knowledgeable
Concern About Y2K
Versus Confusion
and Denial About
Y2K.
The
results of this
analysis paved the
way for the development
of a second questionnaire,
The Year 2000
Questionnaire
23,
which measures attitudinal
groups in the population
toward the upcoming
millennium. Specifically,
The Year 2000
Questionnaire
was designed to
distinguish between
the General Population,
Militia types, Religious
types (predominantly
fundamentalist),
Apocalyptic types
(as distinguished
from Religious),
and Disturbed members
of these aforementioned
populations.
Both
the English and
Spanish 45
versions of this
questionnaire were
posted on the Internet
at the Boston University
Center for Millennial
Studies website
(www.mille.org)
through the end
of 1999. Data analysis
is currently in
progress. Results
of this study,
Outcome of Millennium
2000: Historical,
Technical, Psychological,
and Research-Based
Perspectives,
will be presented
by
D.G. Nemeth,
R. Landes,
C.C. Creveling,
R.M. Dreger, &
M.
Schexnayder
at
the 108th Annual
Convention of The
American Psychological
Association in Washington,
DC, 8/4-8/2000.
